How to Install and Set Up WP-Smooth

It doesn’t take a lot to install and set up your new WP-Smooth WordPress theme. Read on, and you’ll have it knocked out in a snap.

Step 1 – Unzip the File

The file you downloaded can be unzipped with any standard unzip program (if you don’t have one already installed on your computer, Stuffit Expander is a popular option for PC or MAC users). When you unzip the file, you’ll end up with a folder named either wp-smooth-basic, wp-smooth-prem or wp-smooth-dev, depending upon which license you purchased. Within it are all the theme files along with the end user license agreement (please take a moment to read over the license agreement).

Step 2 – Upload the Theme Files to Your WordPress Site

Option 1

If you are using WordPress 2.8 and above, you are able to install the ZIP file of the theme directly from the Dashboard. This simplifies things since you don’t need to use FTP:

1. When viewing the WordPress Dashboard, go to Appearance -> Themes
2. Click “Install Themes” (big tab at top)
3. Click “Upload”
4. Click ‘Choose File’ then navigate to where you downloaded the theme ZIP file; click ‘Open’
5. Click ‘Install Now’
6. When done installing, click “Activate”
7. That’s it!

Option 2

For this step, you’ll need an FTP (file transfer protocol) program. An FTP program allows you to transfer files between your computer and your web hosting account. There are several available, but I use SmartFTP. You’ll want to upload your theme folder to the /wp-content/themes folder in your WordPress installation.

Step 3 – Activate WP-Smooth

Login into your WordPress control panel, and click the Appearance tab. On the next page you’ll see all your available themes. Simply click on the WP-Smooth screenshot, then click the Activate link in the upper right-hand corner of the pop-up screen.

Step 4 – Set Up Your Featured Articles Section

If you don’t already have a “Featured” category, you’ll need to create one. Click the Post tab, then Categories on the sub-menu. Create a new category named “Featured.” Also, be sure the category slug is “featured.”

For the Featured Articles function to work correctly, you should modify your permalink structure. To do that, click the Settings tab, then Permalinks on the sub-menu. Just be sure that any option other than the default permalink structure is selected.

Finally, the only thing left to do is to place some of your posts/articles in the Featured category. By default, the theme is set up to display your 6 most recent Featured Articles in the featured article box on your home page. You can change that number on the WP-Smooth Theme Settings page if you like.

Step 5 – Install and Activate Plugins Supported by WP-Smooth

WP-Smooth has built-in support for the following plugins:

Popularity Contest (updated version for WP 2.7) – Your Most Popular Posts will appear at the top of the right sidebar in the tabbed navigation box as seen on this site.

Get the Image – This is a sweet, little plugin from the very brilliant Justin Tadlock. It will make it easier for you to include post thumbnails for all your posts without using custom fields. More on that in another tutorial.

Be sure you download the latest version of each plugin and upload them to your wp-content/plugins folder. Then activate them. The theme will do the rest.

Step 6 – Add Some Content to Your Sidebars

Click the Appearance tab, then Widgets, and drag some content into your sidebars. Be sure to click the “Save Changes” button when you’re done.

Step 7 – Be Sure To Visit the WP-Smooth Theme Settings Page

The link for this page is available under the Appearance tab. We’ve given you a whole slew of optional settings for the theme, so feel free to change a few of them, and see what sort of site you can create for yourself.

Step 8 – Custom Menus – Very Important

In WordPress 3.0 and above you are able to take advantage of the custom menu feature. Here is a short screencast to show you how it works.

Please note that you must set up the custom menus as instructed in the video. Otherwise, you will have a duplicate page navigation bar as the category bar (if part of the theme).

Optional Step 9 – Make Your Featured Articles Scroll Automatically

If you want to turn on auto-scroll, open the features.php file and find this code at the bottom:

Then replace it with this:

Then, to turn off the active post highlighting, open your Stylesheet (style.css), and find this code about half way down:

#my-glider .controls li a.active {
background:#fff;
}

Then, comment it out like this:

/*---- #my-glider .controls li a.active {
background:#fff;
} ---- */

      We think you will have much success customizing the WP-Smooth theme for your needs. Here’s a sample that you may want to check out from another one of our themes, WP-Jazz, which was customized by a customer at his food and restaurant review site. You can certainly do something similar with WP-Smooth.

    i am looking forward to buy this theme…but, would i be able to remove the second siderbar and use the extra space for blog content?…will you provide any assistance regarding so?….

    • admin says:

      Through the theme control panel (which is accessed on the Dashboard under Appearances > WP-Smooth Theme Settings), you can control the number of columns (2-3) that appear on the pages of your blog/site. Please note that the home page can be restricted based on the column options that you choose for your other components on this page.

      We are always available for support through our forum.

      At the moment, we do not have a demo video for this theme. However, we do have one for another theme which is similar that you can check out here. All of our control panels operate in a similar fashion so this will give you a feel for how they work.

    I was just checking your loading time for this site and it comes out to be 28 secs…is it possible for you to tell me that are u using super cache plugin ? or this loading time is without it? I know i am bugging you quite a bit ; but i seriously like your theme and want to shift over to it with some modifications

    • admin says:

      We are not using the super cache plugin. Although we have had a few problems in the past with the speed of some our sites, I just tested it on our connection and it loaded in less than 3 seconds.

      My advice at this point would be to go ahead and purchase the theme so you can begin testing on your site. If there are any problems, we will make our best efforts to support you. If you are dissatisfied at the end of your testing, we can refund your purchase.

    I love the wp-smooth theme and am considering purchasing it for my http://www.StrategyDriven.com website. However, we use the wp-member pluging as ours is a membership website. I did see a subscribe area in the right sidebar of the wp-smooth theme site but did not see an area to register for the site (does the subscribe add a person to the WordPress users list?) nor did I see a login area. Can wp-member be used with the wp-smooth theme and can a registration/subscription and login links be added to all of the site papes? Is this hard and briefly how could this be done?

    Thank you for your help! I hope you have a great weekend.

    All the Best,
    Nathan

    Very happy with my purchase thus far. Quick question: is it possible to use apostrophe’s for the titles of my category boxes on the homepage? Whenever I try to put one, it messes up (presumably a PHP markup issue). I’ll write “Jim’s Blog,” and the website will show “Jim\’S Blog.” There obviously an auto-capitalizing feature in play as well. I’ve tried to put in the HTML-encoded apostrophe (', for example) but that doesn’t work either.

    Any ideas…?

  7. Jeff says:

    We are most likely going to purchase this theme for our website. Just a couple questions.

    Can the section for “other recent articles” be moved? I would like to have that below the featured articles slide show and the sections of different categories to be below the recent articles.

    Second question: Is there an option to have more than four recent articles being displayed? Same question applies to the category sections. Thanks for your help.

    • admin says:

      Hi Jeff. You can move the ‘other recent articles’ section if you like. It’s not a function that’s built into the theme though, so you’ll need to know your way around the code. Yes, you can show more posts in that section as well.

      The category boxes will show up to 6 posts depending on the settings of the Theme Settings Page.

    Hi, I’m very interested in buying this theme but have a few questions first..

    1. I really like the layout of ‘Smooth’ but I don’t want to have ‘category posts’ on the home page.

    Instead I’d like something similar to the options for ‘Prosper’ where you can have either a ‘basic blog’ set-up, or two posts side-by-side. Is that possible with the ‘Smooth’ theme?

    2. I’d like every post I make to have to begin with the 650×250 featured image underneath the heading. Is that easy to set-up?

    Thanks,

    Ross

    • admin says:

      1. With WP-Smooth, you can do the category posts on the home page or basic blog format. There are no other options.

      2. You couldn’t do an image that wide on WP-Smooth as the main content area is only 630px wide.
